ENGLISH & METHODOLOGY FOR TESOL PURPOSES
(EMTP)

The English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program is a professional development program for English language teachers from non-native English speaking backgrounds. It is offered at ICTE-UQ on the main St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland, approximately 6km from Brisbane city centre.

It is available as a three week fixed date program in July/August each year (where individual enrolments are accepted) or for periods of 4-6 weeks for groups of 12 or more participants at times which suit both ICTE-UQ and the client group.

COURSE OUTLINE

The program provides a combination of English language training and English teaching methodology with a focus on:

  • Development of English language communicative fluency.
  • Intensive development of English language fluency in the four macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with principal focus on speaking and listening.
  • Development of awareness and familiarisation with communicative teaching methodologies.
  • Development of and practice in strategies to promote classroom teaching and learning.
  • Practical use of computers to develop teaching/learning skills designed for teachers with limited or no computing experience.
  • Micro-teaching and materials development.

In addition to the classroom-based program, participants will observe English languages classes being taught by experienced languages instructors at ICTE-UQ and visit Australian schools to observe classroom teaching. An examination is held at the end of the program.

Also included in the program are two half-day and one full-day cultural activities, offering participants the opportunity to learn about and experience Australian culture, lifestyle and environment. At the end of the program, participants will take part in a Certificate of Completion ceremony and a farewell function.
