English for Specific Purposes: TESOL (ESP:TESOL) is designed for students who are considering becoming a teacher of English as a second language (ESL) or who are already ESL teachers in their own country. Students must meet course entry requirements to apply.
ESP:TESOL focuses on developing English language skills through topics of general interest and TESOL-related content. ESP:TESOL also prepares students for selected modules of the Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). The TKT is not a teaching qualification but an assessment tool that aims to:
- Increase the knowledge and confidence of students considering becoming English language teachers as well as those already working in the TESOL field
- Enhance future job and training prospects.
Course Outcomes
ESP:TESOL enables students to:
- Improve their English communication skills
- Develop their knowledge and understanding of current English language teaching methods
- Learn practical activities which can be used for teaching English
- Develop English language and classroom management skills through practice teaching sessions
- Become familiar with practise for the TKT.
Course Content
Course modules include:
- Integrated Language Skills
Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills development using topics of general as well as TESOL-related themes - English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
Analysis and discussion of current methods for teaching English - Practice Teaching Session
Assisted preparation for and guided feedback on a Practice Teaching Session (ESP:TESOL A includes 1 Practice Teaching Session. ESP:TESOL B includes 2 Practice Teaching Sessions) - Guest Speaker/Visits
A teaching observation activity or presentation from a specialist in the TESOL field - TKT Preparation
Familiarisation and practice for the TKT. Each ESP:TESOL course prepares students for two different modules of the TKT

Assessment and Certification
The TKT is held on the Saturday after each 5-week ESP:TESOL course. Students taking the TKT will need to register for the test with their course enrolment. TKT payment should be made with tuition fees. Read more about TKT...
In addition to the TKT separate Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing tests are held at the end of each 5 week session. For more information about ICTE-UQ assessment and certification click here.
Students are also required to adhere to the ICTE-UQ Attendance Policy.

Course Information

| ESP:TESOL A | IELTS 5.0 (5 in Speaking & Writing) or successful completion of ICTE-UQ GE Level 5* |
| ESP:TESOL B | IELTS 5.0 (5 in Speaking & Writing) or successful completion of ICTE-UQ GE Level 5* |
| * After submitting an enrolment form all ESP:TESOL applicants are required to sit an entry test before being accepted into the course. | |
| Duration | 5 or 10 weeks. ESP:TESOL A and ESP:TESOL B each last for 5 weeks. They can be undertaken separately, or together as a ten week course, and in any order. |
