The English for Specific Purposes: Bridging English Program (ESP:BEP) is a 10-week English language pathway course for entry into undergraduate and postgraduate programs at The University of Queensland.

The course is designed to develop the specialist English language needed for UQ degree program entry and studies.

To be eligible for the ESP:BEP students must:
Course Outcomes
ESP:BEP enables students to:
  • Discuss information and opinions in seminar and tutorial format
  • Understand information presented in lectures and tutorials
  • Read, understand and critically analyse information from academic books and journals
  • Research and analyse information and opinions
  • Present information and opinions in seminar and tutorial format
  • Write academic essays.
Students who successfully meet all ESP:BEP exit requirements do not need to sit an IELTS test at the end of the course to gain entry to their UQ degree.

For UQ programs commencing in 2012* - (ESP:BEP 26 March 2012 - 1 June 2012)

Academic IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in Writing) OR IBTOEFL 90 (minimum 21 in Writing)

(no sub-bandscore less than 19)
ESP:BEP completion with minimum overall grade of 4 (minimum Satisfactory Achievement in all 4 skills).
Academic IELTS other than/higher than 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in Writing)
Academic IELTS Overall Bandscore:
Not more than 0.5 band below the specified UQ degree program Overall Band requirement
 
Academic IELTS Sub-bandscores:
If specified for UQ degree program, not more than 0.5 band below the sub-band requirement.
 
If not specified, no more than one band below the UQ degree program Overall Band requirement. 
ESP:BEP completion with minimum overall grade of 5 (for UQ IELTS OB7 or above programs) with a High Achievement in the nominated subskills (i.e. Speaking, Listening, Reading or Writing)

Assessment
Assessment tasks and tests are administered throughout the course to evaluate the development of individual speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students’ end of course results are forwarded by ICTE-UQ to UQ International as a statement of eligibility for UQ degree program entry. Read more about ICTE-UQ Assessment & Certification...
