PART-TIME AND SHORT COURSES ICTE-UQ offers the following part-time and short-course programs: Part-Time English Courses The following courses are offered:
IELTS Preparation is designed to assist students and non-native speakers of English prepare to undertake either the General Training or Academic IELTS test modules. Course content includes tuition to improve speaking skills (including interview techniques), listening strategies, reading and writing strategies and practice tests to simulate the kinds of tasks included in the IELTS test. Conversational English classes focus on speaking (stress, pronunciation and intonation) and listening skills and include a variety of themes of general and specific interest for social and work purposes. The multicultural classes also provide participants with an opportunity to raise their awareness of cultural and cross-cultural issues and enable them to integrate more closely into an English-speaking community. Effective Writing Skills classes are designed for students who wish to improve their English writing skills for general, business or study purposes. Classes are practical in nature and focus on different writing genres, grammar, structure and organisation as well as the differences between formal and informal writing styles. This course is designed for people who are preparing for either the Academic or General Training IELTS test. The course provides an overview of the IELTS test, practical suggestions and exam taking tips and strategies for the four modules, Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. This course is designed for learners of English who wish to improve their ability to use grammar effectively and accurately. The course combines theory and practice; students will review some grammar rules of form and use then practise grammar through fun, interactive communicative tasks. This course is designed for learners of English who wish to improve their English language skills for work or business purposes. The course includes a strong focus on the development of speaking skills through practical business scenarios, role play activities, speaking practise and exercises to develop practical language and pronunciation skills. Writing in English is ideal for students whose writing is weaker than their other skills and who would benefit from an intensive focus in this area. The course includes tuition in essential requirements for academic writing including handwriting and letter formation, grammar, vocabulary building, coherence and cohesion and the writing process. This course is designed for native English speakers and provides an introduction to grammar and phonology. It enables participants to develop their understanding of the form, meaning and phonology of the language they use. It is ideal for recent CELTA/SIT-TC graduates, or other recently trained TESOL teachers, who would like to know more about grammar and phonology. The course also provides a strong foundation for applicants enrolled in or thinking of doing a TESOL teacher training course in the future. It is also ideal for primary/secondary school teachers who want to develop and improve their understanding of English grammar and phonology.
