ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT FOR UQ DEGREE PROGRAM STUDENTS

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES: ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Academic Communication Skills (ESP:ACS) is a full-time three-week program delivered prior to the start of each UQ semester. The program provides new UQ international students from non-English speaking backgrounds who have been accepted into a UQ degree program with the essential English language and academic study skills required for undergraduate and postgraduate study at university level. The full–time program is designed to enable students to:

  • Understand and take notes in academic presentations
  • Prepare and deliver academic presentations
  • Write cohesive academic essays and research reports
  • Efficiently read academic texts
  • Express ideas clearly and comprehensively
  • Actively contribute to academic discussion

The ESP: Academic Communication Skills course also includes an introduction to Australian academic standards and useful orientation information on life in Australia and Brisbane.

ESP:ACS is offered at no additional charge for UQ students from non-English speaking backgrounds and it is highly recommended for all new UQ International students.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION

English for Academic Communication (EAC) is a part-time eight week program providing ongoing English language and academic support at no additional cost for students from non-English speaking backgrounds enrolled in UQ degree programs. EAC is offered each semester and students can choose from 4 streams of study focusing on:

  • Writing for academic communication
  • Speaking for academic communication (pronunciation and vocabulary workshop)
  • Listening and note-taking skills; understanding Australian English
  • Reading strategies & grammar workshop

English for Academic Communication Skills Entry Requirements

Current enrolment in a UQ degree program

Duration

EAC is a part-time eight week program. Course content is delivered over a series of 2-3 hour morning and afternoon classes.

Part-time (24 hours per semester)
