English for Academic Purposes Course Content
English for Academic Purposes course materials and assessment reflect the type of activities and situations students will encounter in a degree program such as attending lectures, note-taking, writing extended essays, reading academic texts, giving presentations and participating in group discussions. Course content also includes instruction and practice in relevant grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation as well as preparation for the IELTS exam. Authentic materials as well as course books are used for teaching and learning.
Main course components include:
- Reading & Writing: a variety of texts are used to develop comprehension and note taking skills, identify a writer’s point of view and understand text organisation. Written work develops students’ abilities to construct complex sentences, paragraphs and essays, and the skills of summarising and paraphrasing. EAP II students use computer labs for researching and writing an extended assignment
- IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking: practice in all areas of the IELTS test, including specific test-taking strategies and timed practice
- Audio-Visual: documentary style programs from Australian television help students understand and follow the topic, develop useful vocabulary and stimulate discussion
